It Happened Again Yesterday

It happened again yesterday. A client called to ask if I could figure out what was wrong. "Mary" was taking an online course that involved group tapping. After she tapped with the group she felt worse, not better. It was an event that went on for a few weeks, and the more she participated the worse she felt. She finally called me because she was "an emotional mess" and her productivity had gone way down at work. She wanted to know why.

It's important to know that, while some people may benefit from teleseminars where a group of people tap together, there are also people for whom this approach is not very helpful and in fact can be problematic.

Group tapping can bring up unresolved issues, sometimes multiple unresolved issues, leaving the participant with no good way of finding resolution. I call that "opening up multiple files". It would be as if you had projects that needed to be done in a bunch of separate files on your desktop, but you opened all of them and tried to address them all at once. It would feel overwhelming. This is what happened to Mary. So, I provided her with an EFT session where we collapsed the main outstanding issues and got her back into a place of functioning well again. By the time we finished the call she couldn't wait to get back to producing at work as she felt back on track mentally and emotionally.

The best kind of tapping is highly customized to the individual. While "scripts" and group tapping can be used to get the ball rolling, they are not designed to address specific events and core issues. They are more like a shot-gun approach where it's hit or miss. And sometimes the result can be overwhelming.

There is a place for group tapping, particularly at a live in-person event where it is possible to get immediate help from a skilled practitioner if you get stuck. Also, the Borrowing Benefits technique uses group tapping to get some amazing results, but it is also best to do that with someone around who can help you, if needed.

What I recommend is that you learn enough about EFT to be able to find good, specific tapping targets and produce customized language for yourself (and for anyone you help using EFT). This kind of information is taught at the Level 1 and Level 2 EFT Trainings I offer and can also be found in books and other people's trainings (if they know how to teach this---please be aware that not everyone who is teaching EFT understands this). Once you really "get" specific, customized EFT and are comfortable using it you may not want to use anything else as it is more effective than generalized tapping and will provide you with much better results.
